Black:Guayaba
With a unique sound, the versatile group, composed by Gustavo González ("Gust"), Javier Morales ("Javi"), Carlos Ortiz ("Toro"), Carlos Colón and Gabriel Calero ("Gaby"), emerged in the year 2000 in the local rock scene. Before the official formation of the band they dedicated their time playing 'pubs' and private activities, preparing thus for a future that seemed promising and also solidifying as a group.
After four years of playing in diverse activities they decided to develop original material and produce what today is their first record "Lo Demás es Plástico". In this album, the musicians concentrated in developing a proposal with multiple musical influences. They worked the project with one of the most noticeable musical engineers, Bob St. John, winner of two Grammys and who has worked with artists of the size of Ricky Martin, Bacilos, Duran Duran, Extreme and Collective Soul, to name a few. The title of the album is the band’s vision on the importance of the music in their lives: "Music is what’s important and the rest is plastic.” This album could be described as a diary in which they mostly speak of love, hate and disaffection. The twelve songs in the album were written by the band and reflect some of their own experiences.
Success came quickly knocking, as the album "Lo Demás es Plástico", for weeks, held prestigious positions in radial diffusion and sales since its debut. Their singles, "Lejos", “Atrapado” and "Despacio" managed for months to be favorites among the general public. Indeed it is this last song that was featured in the Puerto Rican independent film “Ladrones y Mentirosos”. In only a few months, black:guayaba had already received the opportunity of opening concerts for important rock bands such as Enanitos Verdes and Journey, receiving excellent reviews from the press.
Their dedication and hard work helped them fulfill one of their biggest dreams: their first headlining concert. And what better opportunity than being those who initiate the important 25th anniversary celebration of the prestigious “Sala de Festivales Antonio Paoli”, in the “Centro de Bellas Artes” [ Puerto Rico ], that was celebrated during the month of March 2006. Another dream was fulfilled by the end of the year 2006 when the band got nominated in the 7th Annual Latin Grammy Awards for the category of Best Rock Album by a Duo or Group and in the 49th Annual Grammy Awards for best Latin Rock, Alternative or Urban Album.
After a year of pre-production, black:guayaba released their new album “No Hay Espacio” in September 18, 2007. The single “Ayer” quickly topped the charts in Puerto Rico and the US, making the band the new rock sensation of the latin market.
“No Hay Espacio” was again nominated, this time for the 50th Annual Grammy Awards.
