M-Audio Congratulates M-Powered Artist Duncan Sheik on Tony Wins
Groundbreaking musical “Spring Awakening” takes home eight awards
M-Audio would like to congratulate longtime M-Powered artist Duncan Sheik for his work on “Spring Awakening.” On June 10, 2007, the critically acclaimed musical garnered eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Score, Direction and Choreography. Songwriter/composer Sheik was responsible for the indie rock-style music while poet/playwright Steven Sater created the book and lyrics.

Written in 1891 as a stage play, “Spring Awakening” candidly depicts adolescent angst—which startled the conservative audiences of the day. Sater and Sheik refreshed the groundbreaking work by transforming it into a rock musical that expresses these timeless themes in a modern way. Since its 2006 debut, “Spring Awakening” has racked up rave reviews from top critics.

In addition to “Spring Awakening,” the Grammy Award nominee collaborated with playwright Steven Sater on The Nightingale, a musical based on the Hans Christian Andersen classic. Sheik has also composed original music for the Public Theatre's Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night and for The Golden Rooms of Nero, which recently debuted at Cornell University and opened at the Magic Theater in San Francisco earlier this year.

His self-titled debut album, which was an enormous popular and critical success, introduced the hit singles "Barely Breathing" and "She Runs Away," and spent 30 weeks on the Billboard 200. Other albums include "Humming," "Daylight," "Phantom Moon" with lyrics by Steven Sater and his latest, "White Limousine", which was released in January of 2006. His film soundtracks include Great Expectations, The Saint, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Three to Tango, What a Girl Wants, Transamerica and A Body Goes Down. Sheik recently composed and produced the original score for the feature film A Home at the End of the World, directed by Michael Mayer and starring Colin Farrell.
