As 2005 winds down, it might appear to have been a quiet year for McRae Reed and Dave Ruin. But the two Chicago natives—better known as Grayarea—are preparing to let the world know that the word "quiet" couldn't be further from the truth. Grayarea exploded onto the electronic dance scene in 2002 with a series of genre-bending singles. Though they haven't released a new original track or remix in months, they're currently in the midst of their most productive year to date.
Although their career has been built on DJ-friendly 12-inch vinyl singles, their new material focuses on the opposite end of the spectrum. In their early days, the duo was known for expressing strong punk rock and industrial influences from their upbringing. As they began producing their album, the sharper edges of their youth emerged in their recorded music.
A few demos of the forthcoming material leaked from the studio and gained the interest of Belgium-based industrial pioneers Front 242. A few weeks later, they extended an invitation for Grayarea to support their forthcoming North American tour. The live dates with Front 242 will give the group a chance to road-test their latest work before returning home to finish their record. Grayarea's debut album is slated for release in the spring of 2006.
