Hotplugging audio- or MIDI interfaces
Text size [-] [+]

Q: Whenever I connect my USB- or FireWire Audio- or MIDI interface to the Computer while my music software application is running, the interface isn't detected.  Is that normal?

A: Yes!  Music programs will usually only try to detect audio- or MIDI interfaces during program startup, not at any later point.  Close all open music applications before connecting any audio- or MIDI interface to the computer.  When re-opening the program, it will detect the interface.

In case you are using a FireWire device, close the application and shut down your computer - then make the connection and turn the computer back on.  Although your M-Audio FireWire device should be detected when connecting it to the computer while it is running, we do not recommend to do so for reasons that can be found here.
