iLink vs. IEEE1394 / FireWire
Text size [-] [+]

Q: Will my M-Audio FireWire interface work with my I-Link connector on my notebook or desktop PC?

A: I-Link is another name for IEEE 1394 Firewire although the hardware configuration differs.

Most PC Laptops and some desktops such as the Vaio series made by Sony do not carry a 6 Pin IEEE 1394 interface that can supply bus power to FireWire devices directly through the cable. Instead these computers use an alternative 4 Pin IEEE 1394 interface that is more commonly referred to as I-Link. I-Link does not carry bus power because it relies on the IEEE 1394 device to have it’s own power. Devices most commonly associated with the I-Link interface are handheld digital cameras and DV Camcorders, which run on battery power.
