Assigning Transport Control to Boom in Pro Tools
Text size [-] [+]

The M-Audio Axiom AIR Mini 32 allows for more than just automatically controlling the main Transport functions of your DAW.  If you are a Pro Tools user, the Axiom AIR Mini 32 transport controls can be reassigned to the Start and Stop functions of the Boom plugin - and then easily switched back and forth to control the Pro Tools and Boom transport with just a push of a button!  Here's how!

  1.  First, ensure that Pro Tools is installed completely and correctly on your computer.
Please note that HyperControl functionality is only enabled in Pro Tools versions 10.3.3 and higher (Pro Tools, Pro Tools HD, and Pro Tools Express).

  2. Next, ensure the Axiom AIR Mini is installed correctly and HyperControl functionality will work as expected.  To do so, follow the steps below:

    • If you are using a Windows computer, download the latest Windows driver for the Axiom AIR MINI 32.  Pro Tools will recognize the controller as a HyperControl device, but this driver is necessary for it to communicate properly.

    • If you are a Mac user, you do not need to install any drivers, so you can skip the next step.

    • Use the included USB cable to connect the Axiom AIR MIni 32 to your computer.  Open Pro Tools.  Within Pro Tools, choose SetupPeripherals to open the Peripherals window.  Within the Peripherals window, choose the following settings across line #1 and then press OK:
      • Type - M-Audio Keyboard
      • Receive From - Axiom AIR Mini 32 HyperCtrl
      • Send To - Axiom AIR Mini 32 HyperCtrl
      • # Ch's - 8

  3. In Pro Tools, insert an Instrument Track.  To do this, choose Track > New, change the track type to Instrument Track, and choose Create.  This will insert an instrument track into Pro Tools.

  4. Within the created instrument track, change the MIDI Input Selector to Axiom AIR Mini 32 MIDI IN - all channels

  5. Next, within the same instrument track, on Insert A, choose plugin > Instrument > Boom to add the Boom plugin to the track.

NOTE: You can toggle between actively selecting Boom or the Pro Tools DAW by pressing the HyperControl button on the Axiom AIR Mini 32 until Inst/FX is selected and then pressing the center directional button.

  6. Ensure that Boom is actively selected and showing on your screen.  Now, on the Axiom AIR Mini 32 controller, toggle the HyperControl button until it is in MIDI Mode.  You will be in MIDI Mode when none of the HyperControl LED's are lit.

  7.  Next we will map the Start and Stop buttons on the Axiom AIR Mini 32 to the Start and Stop buttons in the Boom plugin.  To do so, follow the steps suggested below:

    • Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) the Stop button on Boom and choose Learn MIDI CC.

    • Press the Stop button on the Axiom AIR Mini 32 to assign it.  You will see the Stop button flash momentarily.

    • Repeat the steps above for the Play button.  You can now control the Boom Transport directly from the Axiom AIR Mini 32.

  8. The Axiom AIR Mini 32 can now be toggled back and forth between controlling the transport in Boom and the Transport in the Pro Tools DAW.  To toggle between the two, simply press the HyperControl button on the Axiom AIR Mini 32 and choose one of the HyperControl Modes (Volume, Pan, Inst/FX) to control the Pro Tools Express transport, or choose MIDI Mode (no LED's lit) to control the transport in Boom.  Enjoy!
