Text size [-] [+]

*UPDATE* This guide is also now available as a video tutorial.  Check it out!

This guide will walk you through setting up an Oxygen Series controller (Oxygen 8 v2, Oxygen 49/61) with Propellerhead Reason 4 and Record software.  This setup will control every device in Reason™ including transportM-Audio Control Surface support is compatible with Record 1.x upwards and Reason™ v4.0.1 upwards.  If your version of Reason™ does not support this Control Surface please go to http://www.propellerheads.se to register your copy of Reason™ and download the latest version.

Note: The Oxygen (silver) Series controllers are class compliant in OS X and do not require the installation of any drivers.

The blue Oxygen 3rd gen keyboards feature DirectLink, see this guide for configuring Reason.

Software Setup

1. Launch Reason™ or Record.

2. Click on the Reason or Record menu, and select ‘preferences’.

3. Select the ‘Control Surfaces and Keyboards’ page from the drop-down menu.

4. Click "Auto-detect Surfaces" and Reason™ or Record will automatically find your M-Audio Oxygen Series controller.

5. You will see a message warning you that the software will override your settings in preset 10 of your controller.  If this is not desirable, click ‘cancel’ and back-up your memory contents before proceeding, otherwise, select ‘OK’.

6. A message will tell you to Please select preset 10 once programming is complete.  Programming is complete once 'SYS' stops flashing on the Oxygen's display.  Click 'OK'.

7. Your Oxygen Series controller will appear in the attached surfaces window with a green tick.

If this does not happen, try adding the controller directly by clicking ‘Add’ and selecting, ‘M-Audio, from the Manufacturer list, select your keyboard from the Model list, and select the first input for your device from the MIDI Input list, then click 'OK'.

8. Close the preferences menu when done.

9. Recall Preset 10 on your Oxygen Series Keyboard:

Oxygen 8 v2 (25 note):  Press the Select button on your Oxygen Series keyboard until the red dot on the LCD appears above "Preset", then press the +/- buttons until P10 appears on your keyboard's LCD display.  Preset 10 is recalled when P10, and the red dot above Preset on the LCD, disappear.

Oxygen 49 and 61: The Oxygen 49 and 61 have dedicated +/- Preset buttons.  Scroll through your Presets using these buttons until "P10" appears (briefly) on your Oxygen's LCD screen.

You can now control every device in Reason™ or Record with your M-Audio Oxygen Series controller, including transport!  Note that some of the devices contain a large number of dials.  In this case, you can switch between ‘groups’ of parameters in Reason™ by holding down OPTION and ALT and pressing a numerical key; press 1 for group 1, 2 for group 2, etc.

On the Oxygen 49 and 61, Fader buttons 8 and 9 can be used to switch between groups of parameters.  Button 8 selects the previous group; Button 9 selects the next group.  Additionally, Fader Buttons 6 and 7 are used to select a different track to control in the sequencer.  Fader button 7 will select the next track, while Button 6 selects the previous track.

To control any device in Reason or Record, you should assign a sequencer track to the device and select that track for MIDI control.  Please note that this includes the mixer and effects.  You will need to create a sequencer track to assign to the mixer/effect manually.

Please consult the M-Audio device Reason Control Surface definition document to see how your M-Audio Controller maps to each device in Reason™, and the group assignments.  Note that this documentation was for the M-Audio Reason setup file for Reason 3, which Propellerheads has natively integrated with Reason 4.0.1.  Please contact Propellerheads for assistance with the Reason or Record software.
