The icon represents an Axiom controller, and the number displays corresponds with the controller (knob, button, fader, pad, wheel, pedal, aftertouch) that was last used. 

The controller last used is also the controller selected for editing.  For example, if you turn knob B1, the number in the bottom left corner will change to "1".
