UCLA Technology Teacher Brings Music Production Experience to the Classroom
Ali Lexa has been producing music and soundtracks for over a decade, including work with such artists as Fat Boy Slim, Dave Wakeling, Trans-X, 2Unlimited and many others. He also worked as a Sound Designer and Production Manager at Trimark Pictures and MGM. After spending years at the cutting edge of music production and software development, Lexa joined the staff of UCLA’s Music Technology Department.
Housed
in a brand-new multimedia complex in the heart of Westwood, the classrooms
are fully equipped with brand new Mac G4 single and dual processors running
Ableton Live,
Propellerhead Reason, and Cubase VST. Lexa has also chosen to outfit his classroom
with M-Audio’s BX5 studio
reference monitors, Studiophile
SBX subwoofer, and Oxygen8 keyboard
controllers.
Though he has been using M-Audio hardware for many years, a student recently turned him on to Ableton’s Live. Immediately impressed by the program’s sound quality, Lexa began integrating it into his Advanced Music Sequencing class. “Loop-based sequencing has gotten to the level where it can be used in the most demanding professional situations and every music producer should be familiar with this form of music creation,” explains Lexa. “Live was my program of choice because of its seamless cross-platform operation and its VST-plug-in and ReWire support. It has exceptional audio quality—especially its time/pitch algorithms.”
